Discord [announced plans to make some eligible new messages from its more than 63,000 Discoverable Servers searchable on the web](https://discord.com/blog/making-content-from-discoverable-servers-easier-to-discover?ref=implicator.ai), with rollout beginning in mid-December. These are directory-listed public communities. Selected posts may appear on [public server pages that search engines can index](https://support.discord.com/hc/en-us/articles/4673515000983-Discord-Server-Web-Pages?ref=implicator.ai).

Discord’s server count comes from its October 27 announcement. These communities have at least 1,000 members, and their administrators opted into Discord’s directory. Group product manager Kelsey Duncombe-Smith wrote that web search would help people find useful answers currently locked inside Discord conversations. Private servers, direct messages and group direct messages are excluded.

What Changed

- Discord plans searchable new messages from eligible public communities beginning in mid-December.
- Every Discoverable Server gets a public web page from November 16; channel summaries have separate controls.
- Opting out affects later messages. Earlier eligible messages can still appear unless deleted.
- Message sharing defaults vary by region; teen accounts cannot enable it.

## Opting out leaves earlier messages eligible

The [member opt-out applies to messages sent afterward](https://support.discord.com/hc/en-us/articles/44302319454359-Discoverable-Content-on-the-Web?ref=implicator.ai). Eligible messages sent while the setting was on can still appear, even if Discord has not yet published them when the member switches it off.

Deleting the original message removes it from Discord’s pages or prevents it from appearing there. Search engines may retain indexed or cached copies longer, requiring additional time or a separate removal request. Switching the setting off is not a bulk deletion tool.

## November pages and December messages

Every Discoverable Server will have a public web page from November 16, using existing profile details if administrators have not created one. People without a Discord account can view those pages. Automated, AI-generated channel summaries may appear that day, covering discussions from November 16 onward.

Individual member messages follow in mid-December through a gradual rollout that could take weeks. Historical messages from before that rollout are excluded. Existing pilots in gaming communities including Rust used administrator and moderator posts only.

Published messages will omit usernames and avatars. That does not guarantee anonymity: identifying details can still appear within the text.

Member-message publication has not begun, so search exposure and removal at that scale remain untested.

## Separate privacy controls

Member and administrator controls began rolling out October 27.

Administrators can [exclude individual channels or disable participation altogether](https://support.discord.com/hc/en-us/articles/44049845164823-Discoverable-Server-Web-Presence?ref=implicator.ai). Public-channel controls default on, with separate toggles and channel lists for summaries and individual messages. Keeping a Discoverable listing requires a web page; administrators who want it removed must leave Discovery.

The member message setting defaults off in the EU/EEA, UK, Canada, Brazil, Australia and South Korea. It defaults on in most other regions, including the United States. Teen accounts cannot enable it.

Members can change the account-wide setting under User Settings > Data & Privacy, separately from the administrator controls for the public channels in each community. Participating channels will carry labels and a notice before posting. Turning off individual messages does not disable channel summaries, which administrators control separately.

## Useful answers and wider audiences

The change could make game guides and technical answers easier to find while exposing conversations to readers outside the communities where they began.

Searchable posts could let a player find a boss guide without first joining a server, or help someone locate an answer in an app’s support discussions. Developers could make game updates accessible through ordinary searches. Links can take readers into the original Discord conversation.

The [official Reddit discussion](https://www.reddit.com/r/discordapp/comments/1xgxb68/?ref=implicator.ai) also documents objections to opt-out consent and to moving conversations into a different audience and context. These are pseudonymous commenters, not a representative user survey. Reddit handle zedrinkaoh supported searchable troubleshooting channels but wanted participation to require opting in. Other commenters questioned whether bots could collect published messages for AI training.

Discord denies selling messages to AI companies. Public access nevertheless permits automated collection, as Discord staff member rkrigney acknowledged: “You're right that anything on the public web can be accessed by people (and bots).”
