The agent takes objectives, plans work that runs for hours or days in the cloud, and routes jobs across Gemini and Anthropic’s Claude models. Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian said, “You give it objectives, not just instructions.” Microsoft introduced its updated Copilot on September 25, and OpenAI launched its persistent dots agents on September 29\. The Gemini agent is in private preview, available only to selected customers.

## Coworker agents

Each [persistent coworker](https://venturebeat.com/orchestration/google-cloud-unveils-persistent-gemini-agents-for-long-running-tasks-and-they-get-their-own-gmail-calendar-and-drive-storage?ref=implicator.ai) receives an @agents.company.com email address, calendar, Drive storage and company-directory entry. Colleagues can @mention it in Chat or tag it in a Doc comment. Edits appear under its own name in version history. Google says it sees only information shared with it.

Every agent gets a cryptographically attested identity. Actions enter an audit trail attributed to the agent.

Google has not said whether every agent gets a Workspace account or only coworkers, whether administrators can disable individual services, or whether extra Workspace licenses are required.

## Claude routing

Administrators can restrict which models agents use. Smart Routing selects among permitted models based on task requirements and cost.

Google says prompts, documents and chat histories stay inside Gemini Enterprise when Claude is used, but has not said whether they are sent to Anthropic for processing or how long they are kept and where.

Hard spend caps, first announced in August, now apply to the agent. When a project hits its limit in the Cloud Billing Console, its agent pauses, and costs can be charged back to departments.

## Pricing and availability

Google says the agent will be included at no additional charge for Gemini Enterprise customers, including through existing Workspace business and enterprise subscriptions, but separate charges for persistent coworkers or extended autonomous tasks remain unspecified. The company has not publicly confirmed a release date. After the event, Google executives told industry analysts to expect general availability around the end of October or early November, and Google said it will share pricing details closer to the wider release.

Financial Services and Legal versions are in preview. At launch, the finance offering includes more than 50 skills and FactSet and LSEG data; Legal connects to NetDocuments and iManage.

## Reliability and oversight

At Thursday’s event, Google said nearly 90% of Fortune 100 companies use Gemini Enterprise. Nearly 500 Google Cloud customers each processed more than a trillion tokens over the preceding year, it said. Those figures cover existing products. They do not measure adoption of the new agent.

Google has supplied no independent benchmarks showing how reliably the agent completes long assignments across applications.

Mahmoud Ramin, research director at Info-Tech Research Group, said the launch creates no new category because OpenAI, Anthropic, Microsoft and Meta already offer multi-agent capabilities.

Britain’s Information Commissioner’s Office opened a general [call for evidence on agent risks](https://thenextweb.com/news/gemini-agent-workspace-identity-europe?ref=implicator.ai) the same day, with responses due November 20\. Agents’ autonomy “is not an excuse for poor compliance,” its technology regulation director, Richard Nevinson, said.

Independent tech analyst [Carmi Levy](https://computerworld.com/article/4232827/google-wants-to-be-the-gatekeeper-for-enterprise-ai-agents.html?ref=implicator.ai) said “whether CIOs and CISOs can trust it to run mission critical business processes indefinitely without doing something stupid enough to generate damaging headlines is another story altogether.”
