## Two chips, one process

The 8 Elite Gen 6 succeeds last year's 8 Elite Gen 5\. The Extreme sits above it, with extra hardware for on-device AI, gaming and video.

Both chips use Qualcomm's Oryon CPU, with two prime cores running at 5GHz and six performance cores at 4GHz. The previous generation's prime cores topped out at 4.6GHz. Qualcomm calls the new peak a first for a phone.

Qualcomm claims that, compared with the 8 Elite Gen 5, the Extreme delivers 13% higher CPU performance, 44% higher GPU performance and 35% higher NPU performance. It puts the standard chip's gains at 10% for the CPU and 14% for the NPU.

The Extreme alone gets 18MB of dedicated GPU memory and Adreno Neural Fusion for AI upscaling and frame generation. Its shared NPU memory is 50% larger than the equivalent pool in last year's chip. It also supports 8K video at 60 frames per second, 4K video at 240 frames per second and the APV codec.

## Early tests favor Apple in key runs

In [tests on a Qualcomm reference design](https://www.tomsguide.com/phones/android-phones/snapdragon-8-elite-gen-6-benchmark-test-results-hands-on-vs-a20-pro-iphone-18-pro?ref=implicator.ai) with 24GB of memory, Tom's Guide measured a Geekbench 7 single-core score of 4,161 for the Extreme. The A20 Pro in the iPhone 18 Pro Max scored 4,741, and the 8 Elite Gen 5 in the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra scored 3,110\. The Extreme's multi-core score was 12,464, just below the A20 Pro's 12,789.

The A20 Pro also led the 3DMark Solar Bay Extreme graphics test, scoring 2,904 against the Extreme's 2,262\. During the reference phone's AnTuTu run, its temperature rose 59 degrees Fahrenheit and its battery level fell 6%.

[HotHardware's separate suite](https://hothardware.com/news/snapdragon-8-elite-extreme-gen-6-crushes-benchmarks-with-big-gains?ref=implicator.ai) on a Qualcomm prototype produced an AnTuTu score of 5,621,072, above the 8 Elite Gen 5's 4,431,036\. Its Geekbench 6 single-thread result was 13% to 14% higher than the prior generation.

All the hands-on tests used Qualcomm reference or prototype hardware at a Qualcomm-hosted event, not retail phones. Battery life and sustained performance on shipping devices have not been measured. Qualcomm paid travel costs for several attending outlets.

## A shrinking phone market

Counterpoint Research expects smartphone unit shipments to fall 14% in 2026 because of memory costs, followed by a possible 1% decline in 2027\. Phone makers have shifted attention toward premium devices.

Handsets still supplied more than $5.1 billion of Qualcomm's $9.9 billion in total sales for the quarter Qualcomm reported in July. At its June 2026 investor day, the company nearly doubled its fiscal 2029 target for non-handset revenue to $40 billion.

"We're going into this transition from what is a very phone-centric model to now an agentic-centric model for new experiences," Chief Executive Cristiano Amon said at Tuesday's launch.

## The first phones

The Xiaomi 18 Pro Max will use the Extreme, and the Xiaomi 18 Pro will use the standard chip. Qualcomm also lists Honor, iQOO, Motorola, OnePlus, Oppo, Redmi, RedMagic and vivo among the customers for the new chips.

Motorola's Signature 27 is one of the first two phones announced with the Extreme, alongside the Xiaomi 18 Pro Max. Its global launch, including the U.S., is due before the end of 2026.
