AI & Data Centers: Nobody Is Building the Cheaper, Cleaner Way to Power AI
An off-grid solar microgrid for an AI data center was priced at $93 per megawatt-hour against $86 for large gas turbines, and it reaches first power about a year sooner. Almost nobody is building one. At least 82 private gas plants are going up outside the US grid instead, turbine slots are selling for 2031 delivery, and the study that ran those numbers also recorded where emissions sit on the industry's own list of priorities. The standard explanation for why AI data centers burn gas is that gas is the only thing fast enough. That explanation does not survive contact with the order book. Turbine makers are selling 2031 delivery slots and telling buyers to plan seven or eight years out. Meanwhile a modeled off-grid solar microgrid comes in eight percent above gas and reaches power a year sooner. The industry knows this. Amazon's West Texas campus pairs 750 megawatts of solar with 7.65 gigawatts of gas.
