Amazon and Shopify Split Over Meta's Muse as Retailers Choose How AI Agents Shop
Amazon blocked Meta's Muse shopping agent on Sept. 20. A day later Shopify announced Shop Pay checkout for Muse on all its stores. The downloads, the ad money and the court gap behind the split.

On Monday morning, Sept. 21, Shopify chief executive Tobi Lütke posted on X about his company’s plans for Muse. “We are excited to announce we are partnering deeply with Muse to enable agentic checkout with Shop Pay on all Shopify stores, offering people an easy and delightful way to shop and check out with Muse,” he wrote.
Amazon’s store and the platform behind Shopify’s merchant stores gave opposite answers, within a day, to whether an AI agent sent by a shopper may buy there.
