DoorDash's AI ordering agent in Apple's Messages app is live with 20,000 users in a U.S. pilot on iOS. It matches the texter's phone number to their DoorDash profile, uses order history and stored payment details, and handles checkout inside the thread. The company opened a U.S. waitlist Wednesday for other U.S. users to join the beta. DoorDash's chief marketing officer, Tim Castree, has said the company does not want to outsource discovery to AI agents.

How the text agent works

The company unveiled the service Tuesday at its Dash Forward event at its San Francisco headquarters. It uses the same technology as Ask DoorDash, the in-app chatbot launched in June 2026.

“Every other AI agent is meeting you for the first time. We've known you for years,” DoorDash co-founder Andy Fang said.

Ayush Shah, the product's technical lead, asked for his usual breakfast burrito during a live demonstration. The agent returned the order with his modifications already loaded.

The service sends photos from restaurants' store pages and accepts uploaded images. A fridge photo can prompt recipe suggestions and a cart containing missing ingredients. With permission, it can also send proactive messages about a customer's usual coffee order.

DoorDash has given no broader rollout date or information about Android availability.

Errors in early testing

Bloomberg News tested an early version and found prices that differed from those in the app. The agent also sent photos that did not match its recommendation.

A DoorDash spokesperson said people joining the waitlist will receive a newer version.

The basket figures

Grocery orders built with Ask DoorDash, the in-app chatbot, had nearly 50% higher basket value than the same consumers' traditional orders from August through early September 2026. DoorDash has released no comparable figures for the Messages pilot. A Citizens analyst note summarizing Tim Castree's commentary said people who clicked through to DoorDash from AI chatbots converted at higher rates and filled bigger baskets than standard traffic. Orders from early agent traffic came with baskets two-thirds smaller, the note said. The published summary of the note does not say which agents, over what period, or from what base that reduction was measured.

Castree said about half of customers arrive without knowing what they want. He said the outcome of AI agents is undetermined.

Nearly half of the chatbot's restaurant orders from June through August 2026 went to places the customer had never tried. These usage figures are DoorDash's own.

Corporate ordering

A separate DoorDash-hosted connector uses the Model Context Protocol, a standard connecting AI applications to outside services. Workplace agents can find items, build carts, place orders and track deliveries.

A Slack bot could collect employees' lunch requests and place a group order. SpaceXAI, Cognition and Mercor have used the tool internally. Companies can join the corporate ordering beta waitlist from Sept. 30.

Uber and Instacart have built plug-ins for assistants such as ChatGPT or Gemini, with varying levels of integration. Some on Wall Street worry that orders placed through outside assistants could cost delivery platforms in-app advertising revenue.

Bloomberg Intelligence said tools such as Instinct or Meta's Muse could shift “traffic and customer ownership away from established platforms.”

Fang said DoorDash is in talks with Meta about an official link with Muse. DoorDash CEO Tony Xu sits on Meta's board.

“We’re actively talking to all these different players and so we want to meet customers where they are at the end of the day,” Fang said.
