Settings that follow you into the car
Personal Intelligence is off by default, and users choose which apps it can access.
Ars Technica's Ryan Whitwam wrote that Google has a habit of nudging Gemini users to opt in to data sharing, so some drivers may not realize they have already allowed access to account data. Those permissions now extend to answers delivered through the car's screen and speakers.
Whitwam reported that Google says it does not train Gemini on the personal data itself, but it does use inputs and outputs, which can contain personal information. He wrote that the company attempts to filter that information out without promising that it will catch everything.
Drivers can review connected apps or switch the feature off in Gemini settings. Cars with Google built-in will deliver personal responses only while the driver's phone is connected. Their in-car settings will also let drivers disable personal responses even if the phone has Personal Intelligence enabled.

What drivers can ask
Google's airport example combines information from an email with a search for current flight details. A driver can ask, “What's my flight gate? And is my flight on time?” Google says Gemini retrieves the booking information and checks for delays.
Another suggested request is “Take me to my doctor's appointment.” Google says Gemini can use the connected calendar to find the destination.
What Google has not disclosed
Google says Personal Intelligence “shares uniquely tailored answers while letting you keep your eyes on the road.”
Google's announcement gives no figures on how many drivers or cars are eligible or how many users have Personal Intelligence switched on. It gives no accuracy or safety testing data for in-car use.

Eligibility and the next rollout
The rollout covers personal Google accounts belonging to people aged 18 or older. Workspace business, enterprise and education accounts are excluded. Availability is global except for the European Economic Area, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and Nigeria.
How-To Geek links the European Economic Area exclusion to the European Union's Digital Markets Act and the exclusions of Switzerland, the United Kingdom and Nigeria to similar legislation. Google gave no reason for the exclusions in its post.
Gemini reached Android Auto in November 2025 and cars with Google built-in in April 2026. Google began removing Assistant from phones and Android Auto on September 4, 2026; cars with Google built-in kept Assistant beyond that date. Personal Intelligence launched as a paid feature in January 2026 and reached free U.S. users in March.
Cars with Google built-in will receive Personal Intelligence “in the coming months,” Google said, without giving a date.
