Ollama vs vLLM vs SGLang: What Is the Best Open Model Server?

Your team wants to run an open model on its own hardware and must choose the software that serves its answers.

Four simultaneous requests finished one after another in our October 9 test of Ollama 0.40.1 on an Apple M3 Ultra Mac Studio. The pattern held across three models at Ollama's default parallelism setting. Total tokens per second barely changed from a single request. Our tests covered one machine. We did not test vLLM or SGLang ourselves, and raising Ollama’s parallelism was outside the experiment.

An accepted request could still be waiting for an answer. That matters when several teammates arrive together. The GPU figures in the piece come from other people’s tests. The comparison charts measure different things. The sources did not measure GPU cost per token for traffic sharing long prompts on vLLM or SGLang. How much of that evidence covers your team’s workload?

The Findings

8.3 s
The fourth of four simultaneous requests finished at this point on Ollama at its default parallelism setting. The job took 2.1 seconds alone. We measured hermes3:8b on a Mac Studio using Ollama 0.40.1 on October 9. Acceptance alone did not tell a teammate when their answer would arrive.
0.07 s
Ollama reused earlier work after we changed the last token of a roughly 7,821-token prompt in the same test. The figure measures the wait before the model starts answering. Processing it the first time took 8.51 seconds. Changing the first token cost 8.50 seconds. In this test, changing the beginning brought back the full wait before an answer started.
