The Decision Brief Your team pays for coding-agent time, and Ponytail, a free plugin with 174,525 GitHub stars, says it makes the agent write less code and cost less doing it. Before rolling it out to every seat, the question is whether the bill actually goes down on your own work. We read the author’s October benchmark, three outside tests and the plugin’s own source code; Implicator did not run the plugin. The evidence stops short of any invoice, because every dollar figure in these tests is an estimate or a list-price calculation. One finding: in a 480-build outside test on Opus 4.8, mean cost per run rose about 13% with Ponytail on, although the agent wrote far less output, because input tokens nearly doubled. The full piece sets the author’s savings result against that test and a Cursor-based one, shows where the shorter code failed on bad input, and supplies a proposed two-arm pilot record for checking the claim on your own repository before rollout. This PRO Briefing is open to every Implicator subscriber. The evidence and the pilot record are below; subscribe free to read them. |
