In an Aug. 29, 2026 preprint on checkpoint recovery, Guanlong Wu of Southern University of Science and Technology and five colleagues described an agent that cleaned a repository and recorded a passing check. Recovery then restored older files while the successful check remained in agent state. The result was associated with code that the check had never examined. This was a controlled workflow, not a customer incident.

The checkpoint itself had worked as designed.

Coding-agent checkpoints preserve selected state, which may include files, a conversation, or tool records. They do not necessarily restore connected services or erase effects that already happened. The practical task is to match each permitted action to a recovery mechanism, an owner, and evidence that shows what survived.
